The four types of attention are sustained attention, selective attention, alternating attention, and divided attention, where sustained attention being the ability to focus to a stimuli or task for an extended length of time. The capacity to focus to a single stimulus or activity in the midst of additional distracting inputs is referred to as selective attention. The capacity to shift focus attention between two or more stimuli is referred to as Alternating Attention. The capacity to attend to many stimuli or pay attention to multiple stimuli at the same time is referred to as divided attention (Goldstein, 2018).
